It's that time of year again...time to gas up and hit the road!The 2015 LuMind Foundation's Race for Research road rally is near and Brayden's Bunch will be taking the green flag July 6 at the Darlington Speedway. The checkered flag will drop on July 8 at the GoPro Motorplex in Mooresville, NC.
We are really excited to be a part of the second annual rally and want to share our passion with you.
So, why do we do this? There are three main reasons we "race" for Brayden.
- This research is something that will help Brayden have a future filled with independence
- As more research is funded, more studies can be completed that examine the brain function of those with Ds
- The more advanced the studies become, the more is uncovered highlighting the remarkable similarities in the brain function of those with Ds and individuals with Alzheimer's
- The brain function is so similar, some individuals with Ds as young as 8-years-of-age can begin to develop a pathology Alzheimer's disease
- Many individuals with Ds begin to show signs of Alzheimer's disease at age 40
- The LuMind Research Down Syndrome Foundation provides grants that fund the research and development of pharmaceutical therapies to aid in cognition
- Roche currently has a Phase II trial underway to improve cognition and behavioral deficits
- Elan Corporation has recently completed clinical trials of cognition drug therapies
- Numerous discoveries have been made in a relatively short period of time
- Down syndrome cognitive research receives a disproportionate amount of public funding
- While some government funds are earmarked for Ds research, the research community relies on the funding from individuals to really "fuel the fire"of research
